Montenegro's Island for the rich

Aman Sveti Stefan. Montenegro. Photo by Simon Raven
Sveti Stefan is a small island off the coast of Montenegro. Formerly a village a few miles outside the coastal city of Budva the traditional stone houses with terracotta roofs have been converted into an upmarket five star hotel resort called Aman Sveti Stefan. If it's glamour that draws you to Montenegro head to Budva and join the beautiful people who flock here on yachts and private planes from across Europe, Russia and the world to sun themselves in style.

Montenegro once belonged to former Yugoslavia and is located south of Croatia on the Adriatic. Today the city of Budva is a popular tourist centre with casinos, restaurants and nightclubs on every street corner. For a more authentic view of this attractive country, head to the historic town of Kotor on the dramatic Bay of Kotor. Surrounded by mountains this stretch of the Adriatic will not disappoint even the most seasoned traveller. Hire a car and head into the mountains and you will discover stunning national parks with hiking trails and the Tara river canyon; the deepest canyon in Europe.
