Sultan Ahmed Mosque "Blue Mosque". Istanbul, Turkey. Photo by Simon Raven
If you're visiting Istanbul this summer you will struggle to miss the imposing Sultan Ahmed Mosque “Blue Mosque”, which was built under the orders of Sultan Ahmet I (1603-17) as a monument to rival the nearby Aya Sofya. Located at the heart of Sultanahmet Park, this imposing structure is covered in thousands of Iznik blue tiles, which are illuminated by the 260 windows that draw light into the vast central prayer hall.
